In Search Of The Pacific Skrelly iPhone Vid

In early January we left the snow and arctic temperatures behind in search of sunny skies and skateable cellar doors in California.

From January 5th - January 13th we traveled to Long Beach for the Agenda Trade Show then made our way to Los Angeles then San Francisco to film for the new Orchard video and to visit the East Coast fam out west.

Unfortunately, Skrellys are a scarce resource in California, but that didn't stop the flow bros Nick Rudzinski and Dillon Buss from shredding whatever came our way.

Many clips were captured with the VX, but this iPhone edit shows the fun times and less trick-centered perspective of the filming mission.

Skaters in order of appearance:
Nick Rudzinski
Dillon Buss

Orchard Yearly Harvest : Part 3 of 3 - Team Updates

As the year comes to a close, we will be revisiting some of the highlights that made 2013 a year to remember for the Orchard family. Between the skate jams, art shows, new shop opening, pro visits, team rider coverage and more, 2013 has been a wild ride!

In this final post of the harvest we will revisit some of the highlights of what the team has been up to the past year.

Over the past 18 months, the team has been collectively working on the new Orchard video due out this spring, so keep an eye out for a teaser coming sooner than later.

One clip that we put out this year was a commercial for Iron Claw's Faux One One video, demonstrating the vibe of skating rocks.

jad crooks jam.jpg Jad Angell turned 40 this past summer, which marks his official transition from the Prince of Copley to the King of the Berbmuda Triangle. If you see him slappying curbs at your local pre-fab park give him a high-5 and a 'Gansett. (photo by Dusty)

berman mascis.jpg In between renting out apartments and buying a house of his own, Lee Berman has been getting a fair share of travelling in and gathering clips for his part in the new Orchard video coming this spring. (photo by Rob Collins)

Kevin Coakley has had a busy year. Aside from starting off 2013 with this radical welcome part to Think Skateboards, K-Snags chalked up the frequent flyer miles and a couple new stamps on the Passport. In between learning new Yoga poses, Kevin landed some tricks Brixton's "Water Hazards" tour video and also has been busy filming for some new projects that will come to light in early 2014.

Resident ledge lizard Eric Dasaro was added to the Politic flow squad after his part in last year's "Natural Selection" video. Taking a note from the mid-90's approach, Eric puts together some amazing lines combining a technical approach with power and high speeds. Stay tuned for his part in the upcoming Orchard video this spring!

Steve Durante has been holding things down in southern Jersey, and has a couple of clips in this recent Politic "People's Temple" video.

Being a full time Firefighter and father of twin toddlers hasn't slowed down Jerry Fowler. In between daddy duty and saving lives, Jerry still finds time to skate and film radical maneuvers as shown in recent Hopps commercials.

bro-gumps-caddilac-ollie.jpg Orchard co-owner and Coda Skateboards Man-Am Broderick Gumpright had the summer skate season cut short when he blew his knee out this past April. After Meniscus and ACL surgeries, Bro Gumps will be back on board sooner than later. (photo by Rob Collins)

Lurker Lou has kept himself quite busy the past year. Along with having guest clips in probably more than a dozen web vids, his company Iron Claw Skates released "Faux One One" in April, which by our unbiased panel of judges made it in our unofficial top 5 vids of 2014 list.

At the beginning of the year Fritz Mead parted ways with 1031 Skateboards to ride the waves of free agency, but found his way in to the Black Box van for the Cold War tour and had a couple of photos in Thrasher. Keep an eye out for more power moves in 2014 from Fritz.

After last fall's Suede Peach video part, Frankie has been filming like a madman for the upcoming Orchard vid and painting pretty pictures.

Joey Pepper had his long awaited pro model shoe come out from Huf this past spring, and even though he started off 2013 recovering from ankle surgery, Joey was able to keep himself busy in the woodshop creating some radical hardwood light pieces and furniture. He even got himself a website too! Now that he is fully recovered as evidenced in the Huf Euro Stoops
Tour Vids, we're all looking forward to more Pepper footage in 2014!

Alexis Sablone has been pretty busy finishing off her PhD in Architecture at MIT, but has still been able to find the time to skate and hold her own at the Women's XGames.

As highlighted in the Quartersnacks Lost Tapes video above, Hopps proprietor Jahmal Williams has been a professional skateboarder for close to 20 years now, and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon! To say that we're excited for his part in the upcoming Static IV would be an understatment!

This summer we released a video of our first official flow rider, Nickodem Rudzinski. Whether it's a gap, ledge, kinked rail, crusty bank, big ramps, or little curbs, Nick is down to shred it all! Even though he is just 16 years old in this footage, he skates with an approach that is much more mature than his years would indicate. Nick has been receiving flow support from Chocolate, Spitfire, and Huf, and we are all stoked to see where he takes things in the future.

Orchard 2013 Yearly Harvest : Part 2 of 3

As the year comes to a close, we will be revisiting some of the highlights that made 2013 a year to remember for the Orchard family. Between the skate jams, art shows, new shop opening, pro visits, team rider coverage and more, 2013 has been a wild ride!

Picking up where we left off with last week's post of skate events, this week will focus on the different Art shows in the Extension Gallery, pro visits to the shops, and different community events.

On Saturday February 23rd, 2012 we hosted a release party and the "Downeaster" art show to commemorate Orchard team rider Joey Pepper's first signature model shoe from Huf Footwear.

The art show featured intricate lighting pieces created by Joey and paintings by his longtime friend Rocco Hodgdon, proprietor of Death or Glory Tattoos in Westbrook, ME.

Michael Chew put together this video piece from the event.

This past April, our beloved hometown was victim to a terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon and these horrible events effected our entire city on many levels.

In the spirit of helping our fellow Bostonians we teamed up with other Boston skate/lifestyle shops and brands to organize a unified benefit event called One Big Push where we were collectively able to raise over $8500 for victims of the bombing.

Endless thanks go out to everyone that supported the event and to all the companies that donated to the benefit.

In May we had the amazing opportunity to work with Dennis Mcnett, Anti Hero, and Vans to host an exhibit of Dennis' original work for Anti Hero. In addition to the exhibition, we released a collaboration project with Dennis and Anti Hero entitled Off Campus Housing that included an Orchard X Anti Hero deck and a Care Package from Mom filled with all types of co branded goodies.

Check the video by Michael Chew where Dennis Mcnett talks about the source of inspiration for his work, and how he first linked up with Julien Stranger and John Cardiel to create graphics for Antihero.

On Saturday July 13th 2013 we hosted an art show in the Extension Gallery featuring work from Rook Brand's creative director Joe King.

"Starting Points" showcased a collection of desired works and mediums ranging from graphite on paper to pen and ink to digital media. With a well-rounded perspective on art and design, Joe wanted to give a sneak peek of the working process from the rough and gritty to the polished and refined. "Starting Points" highlighted all the first tools we learned when discovering our passion to create.

On Saturday August 3rd, 2013 the Cold War tour came to Boston with riders from the Zero and Mystery teams for a demo and signing at the shop.

In this clip filmed and edited by Michael Chew, Zero owner and legendary pro skater Jamie Thomas talks about the tour, skating East Coast spots, and the upcoming Cold War video.

This past August marked a major milestone for us when we opened up our Newbury Street store in Boston's Back Bay. To celebrate the occasion we hosted a pro meet & greet and grand opening party.

On September 14th, 2013 we had the amazing opportunity to host the 20 Years Of Girl art exhibit in the Extension Gallery at our Allston shop, with special guests Rick Howard, Mike Carroll and Ben Colen in attendance.

Along with the art show, we teamed up to release a collaboration project with Girl Skateboards that consists of a board, tee shirt, and DVD mixtape of some of our favorite Girl parts from the last 20 years.
The capsule is available in both of our Boston locations and online at www.orchardshop.bigcartel.com.

Check this video of the opening reception by Michael Chew, and make sure to watch the mixtape on Vimeo here

In association with Converse and Santa Cruz Skateboards we proudly hosted an art exhibition by the one and only Jason Jessee on Saturday October 5th, 2013 in the Extension Gallery at our Allston shop.

Entitled "Manufactured Inspirado / Keeping the Mythos Alive", the show features photographs and memorabilia from his 25+ year career in skateboarding. Along with items from Jason's personal collection, the exhibit will also feature his unique sculpture art that is a blend of punk rock spirit, motorcycle culture and general weirdness that only Jason could come up with.

Check the Michael Chew video of Jason's weekend in Boston featuring Jason's Converse teammate Kenny Anderson.

On Saturday night, November 9 2013 Orchard's Extension Gallery hosted and exhibition opening of A Place in the Sun - an installation of photographs from professional skateboarder Arto Saari.

On the following evening, the rest of the New Balance Numeric joined Arto for an autograph signing at Orchard. This was the first signing for the NB# team and included PJ Ladd, Levi Brown, Tyler Surrey, Jordan Taylor, Tom Karangelov, and Jordan Trahan.

In this video by Michael Chew, Arto talks a bit about the New Balance Numeric program, their new video, and about his first visit to Boston.

Orchard 2013 Yearly Harvest : Part 1 of 3

As the year comes to a close, we will be revisiting some of the highlights that made 2013 a year to remember for the Orchard family. Between the skate jams, art shows, new shop opening, pro visits, team rider coverage and more, 2013 has been a wild ride!

Over the next few fridays we will post up a recap of what went down in 3 sections - Skate Jams and Contests, Team Rider coverage + Orchard Skate Clips, and Art Shows and Pro Visits at the shops.

First up, let's look back on some of the skate action that went down around town:

Birthday Jam
Ever since our 1 year shop anniversary in February of 2007, we have been renting out a skatepark for a private session for family and friends. On Feb 11, 2013 the awesome folks at Converse helped us rent a coach bus to bring the fam out to Subliminal Skatepark in Shrewsbury, MA. Check this edit by Alex Pelletier with additional filming by Benny Goldman:

Dead of Winter Miniramp Contest
From December to March the ground is pretty much guaranteed to be covered in either snow, salt, sand or a frothy mixture of the 3. These months are informally referred to as miniramp season (or parking garage days for the transitionally disinclined). On February 24th we hosted the second annual Dead of Winter Miniramp contest at the Allston shop. Check the video by Alex Pelletier:

Battle at the Barrics
Everybody loves a good game of S.K.A.T.E, especially when there is cash on the line. But why not put a little spice on the perfect conditions usually reserved for these kinds of things? Because hardwood flooring is way more east coast than warehouse ground, or because it’s just way more fun to have a game of S.K.A.T.E inside a bar! Let’s also make sure we time it for when there is still snow on the ground and everyone is rusty as possible to keep things really interesting.
That was pretty much the thought process behind the first Battle at the Barrics, aka March Radness, A contest that we hosted along with Converse at the North Star Bar in downtown Boston on March 10th.

Check the playlist of every game below filmed by Michael Chew, and get ready for the 2014 Battle in March!

Go Skate Day
Every year on June 21st we celebrate the official start of summer and Go Skateboarding Day with a skate jam on a temporary skate park. This year we brought the set up to the Chinatown courts in downtown Boston for an afternoon of good times. Check the edit by CN with additional filming by Sam Mccormick:

Red Bull DIY Spot Supply
In 2011 the first pour of concrete was laid in an unused street hockey rink in Jamaica Plain by some local JP skaters. Around the same time a couple of flat bars and boxes found their way into the rink, and over time a few more concrete items were built and destroyed and rebuilt, creating what is essentially the JP community DIY skatepark.
This past summer, we were able to link up with the generous folks at Red Bull to generate some funds to build a more substantial centerpiece for the spot. The project was led by Dougie Death and a solid crew of locals including T-Mac, Braindead Ed, The Fancy Lad boys, plus countless others.
In a city desperately lacking public skate spaces, initiatives like this show just how healthy and strong our city's skateboard community is and reinforces the need for more spots and parks. Check this clip edited by Armin from one of the first sessions on the new piece.

Lakai Wear Test
In conjunction with the 20 Years of Girl Art Show and Collab release, we had the amazing opportunity to crew up and hit the streets to show Mike Carroll and Rick Howard around town for a Wear Test for the Lakai Vincent Alvarez pro model.
Check the edit of the afternoon session by Michael Chew:

Helloween Jam
For years before the shop even existed, members of the Orchard fam have been putting together an annual Helloween jam at the Chinatown Courts. We’re starting to lose track of the years, but it’s somewhere around 10 years deep by now.
This year was particularly special because thanks to Converse, we were able to bring a slice of California life back east in the form of short fiberglass picnic tables and benches.
Check some of the radness from the jam in this edit by CN with additional filming by Benny Goldman:

Individuals Collective Builds An Orchard

When we first made the decision to open a new shop on Newbury Street this past summer, The !nd!v!duals Collective were our first choice of who we wanted to work with in creating the new shop's fixtures and build out.
The Individuals are a Brighton based artist collective that creates magical things from salvaged junk and reclaimed wood. Some of y'all might remember their "Lovesick Cafe" exhibit in the Extension Gallery at the Allston shop back in 2011. But instead of making cute, cuddly, canibalistic creatures, this project was all about creating an environment, and we couldn't be happier with the results!
